Prior to the 14th Century the term ‘vanity’ did not have such narcissistic undertones as it holds today and merely meant ‘futility’. It was related to the term vainglory and essentially referred to the ultimate fruitlessness of human efforts in the world.
In this series of new drawings, images of abandonment and neglect predominate. The shells of houses and buildings, sheds and workplaces are used as symbols to highlight this notion of mans mortality against the passage of time. Although the images allude to a romantic existence, there is an unsettling quality present. Unlikely pattern combinations and luminous areas of colour set against grey and sepia toned ink washes serve to heighten the tension and ambiguity in the works. These colourful embellishments and decorative aspects serve to imbue the works in a vain attempt to instil a sense of renewed life into these images of dereliction, reminding us of the ephemeral nature of beauty as well as the brevity of human life and the inevitability of decay.
